Design Process

The director, Gary Diomandes, and I began discussing the design for this show by exploring ideas centered around public amenities, the "Bad Old Days of NYC", the dark deco of graphic novels. As the design evolved, three student assistant designers were added into the process. The idea of a post-apocalyptic theatrical environment emerged. Together as a team the environment and functionality of the scenery was debated and collaborated. Eventually, each assistant had their own piece to design. Miranda Leyson created the environment of piles of theatrical artifacts for the post-apocalyptic aesthetic reminiscent of Les Miserables. Karina Kim focused on developing the logos for the Urine Good Company and the Public Amenity and the paint treatment for the entire set. Matthew Kornegay developed the structure of the public amenity number 9, the secret hideout sign, and the trusses.
