Design Process

The North American premiere of the musical, Jane Eyre, had many challenges including the countless episodic seamless scene changes needed. Senior Tyler Herald worked with me as an associate scenic designer. Being an associate designer elevates the student's experience to that of a colleague who is empowered to make artistic decisions. We incorporated projections as well as painted a backdrop for the show. We collaborated with two graduate students, Ron Rybkowski, lighting designer; and Will Coeur, projections system designer. From the beginning, Tyler and I worked together to research, develop a design vocabulary, create projection content, and implement the vision of the environment. We felt the music and story had an ethereal wispy smoke quality. Images from a Restoration Hardware catalogue were our inspiration. We were also compelled to create a framework of the stage picture that alluded to the artistic nature of the main character, Jane Eyre. Upon presenting the scenic design to the technical director, Dan Schmidt, he commented that the research images resembled shipping pallets. It was at that point that Dan and I decided that we would make a commitment to create the set out of primarily repurposed materials making Jane Eyre WIU's first sustainable and green scenic design. We are committed to exploring ways we can incorporate more sustainability into our seasons each year by determining at least one show per year to build the scenic design, and eventually all the design areas, with greener and more environmentally-friendly methods.
